Advantages of using aluminium for Cnc Machined Parts

Although there are countless aluminium alloys with varying degrees of characteristics, there are some basic characteristics that apply to basically all aluminium alloys.

Machinability

Aluminium can be quickly shaped, manufactured and machined in the presence of a variety of different processes. Aluminium can be cut quickly and easily by machine tools because it is soft, easy to cut, inexpensive and requires less effort than steel. These characteristics are a great advantage for machinists and customers ordering parts. Furthermore, aluminium's excellent machinability means that it is much less likely to deform during machining. Given the higher tolerance it enables CNC machines to achieve, its accuracy will be even higher.

Specific strength

Aluminium is approximately one third as dense as steel. The mass is then relatively lighter. Despite its low weight, aluminium is very strong. This combination of strength and weight is known as the specific strength of the material. Aluminium's high specific strength makes it suitable for many industrial needs, such as the automotive and aerospace industries.

Corrosion resistance

Aluminium is resistant to scratching and corrosion in conventional marine and atmospheric environments. This property can also be enhanced by anodising. It is important to note that the corrosion resistance of different grades of aluminium varies. The most conventional and common CNC machined grades are instead the most resistant.

Low temperature performance

Most materials lose some of their quality properties below zero degrees. Carbon steel and rubber, for example, become brittle at low temperatures. Aluminium, on the other hand, retains its softness, ductility and strength at very low temperatures.

Electrical conductivity

The electrical conductivity of pure aluminium is approximately 37.7 million Siemens per metre at room temperature. Although aluminium alloys are less conductive than pure aluminium, they are sufficient for use in electronic components. On the other hand, if the desired properties of a machined part are not electrical conductivity, aluminium would not be the right material for it.

Recyclability

As CNC Machining is a subtractive manufacturing process, a large amount of swarf, or scrap, is generated. Aluminium is highly recyclable, requiring relatively little energy, effort and cost to recycle. This makes it highly desirable among those who want to recoup their expenses or reduce material waste. It also makes aluminium a more environmentally friendly material to process.

Anodising possibilities

Anodising, a surface processing process, improves the material's resistance to wear and corrosion, which is extremely easy to achieve for aluminium. This process also makes it easier to process aluminium parts for colouring.
